Can higher education institutions choose a suitable EQAR-registered agency?
Yes, HEIs in Wales may select a suitable, EQAR-registered agency.
Other British higher education institutions can not choose among the EQAR-registered agency for their mandatory external quality assurance.
Eligibility criteria for foreign agencies operating in Wales: EQAR-registration. The appointed agency has to demonstrate knowledge of the local context in Wales and have appropriate Welsh language capacity.
Conditions for the agencies’ work in Wales: national requirements i.e. frequency and validity of reviews, training of the peer review team, assessment of the institution's baseline requirements for the Quality Assessment Framework for Wales, use of a set of common judgments (see further information below).
All higher education institutions with degree awarding power are able to approve their own awards and therefore they can employ the European Approach for the quality assurance of their joint programme. This is notwithstanding the fact that the approval of their own awards must be done according to the UK Quality Code for Higher Education.
